To be perfectly honest, Reese had her doubts about leaving the warm comfort of her bed. It was one of those days, where the weather was so damn perfect outside that it was a sin to waste it, but there was something more important indoors that needed to be attended to. For Reese, this important matter was sleep. It was exam time, and the day before Reese had pulled a caffeine-fueled all nighter. Her body was drained after she walked out of that exam room, just dying for some greasy food and a bed. She laid in bed all day long, sleeping and watching movies and sleeping some more. She was still drained when she woke up that morning, rubbing her eyes and groaning. The sunlight was appreciated, a welcome change from the usual gloomy English weather, but it went right in her eyes and disturbed her rest. Now that she was awake, what was there to do? Make herself presentable for the day, probably, should have been first on her list. A quick shower, dressing in comfortable clothes and a meal were all accomplished by the dark haired young woman at a leisurely pace, though she didn’t really want to waste the day. Her desire to sleep lost the battle. It was a total knock out when she glanced outside at the beautiful day. The sky was a bright, crisp blue, the clouds well-defined and floating along happily in the sky. How could you be miserable and lazy on a day like this? Just grab some caffeine and you’re on your way. Reese downed two Red Bulls, mass texting her friends for something to do. This was the life. She sprawled out onto the couch to watch some TV, waiting for answers. Pretty soon she had Sophie’s sleek body curled up on her stomach, purring loudly as Reese rubbed her ears. She received a few immediate replies that people were still cramming for exams, or already had plans. Reese was ready to throw in the towel and just go tanning at the pool or something, when she got a text that confused her.
‘if you want to hang out, name the place where a reptilian river divides.’ Reese’s first thought was pretty much ‘what the fuck?’. Because really, who sends riddle text messages to do something simple like hang out? The answer was Lex. Lex Edmonton was the sender of this mysterious message. Mysterious, but simple. Hyde Park was separated by the Serpentine river. She texted her reply, only to receive another cryptic message. ‘i’ll be there waiting. text me when you reach the grand entrance.’ Okay, Reese’s curiosity was getting the best of her common sense. Common sense dictated a wild goose chase around a big-ass park, but her feelings and heart said that a good time would be had if she went to spend time with Lex. After shooing away Sophie and getting ready to go out (because sweats and a paint-splattered tee shirt were only appropriate when lazing about the house), Reese headed out of her apartment and to the nearest bus stop. The fact was, Reese kind of had a little thing for Lex. She had for a while, since they met a while back through Bella. He was charming, and he made her laugh and smile enough for her to deem him a good guy. His looks weren’t what she typically went for, but he was just a coagulation of all things she tended to adore in the opposite sex rolled up into a little ball named Lex Edmonton. The only thing that stood in their way was her boyfriend. Currently ex-boyfriend, probable future boyfriend. She and Danvers had a rocky, turbulent relationship. Like an amusement park ride, it had its ups and downs. It both made her happy and anxious, and sometimes it made her sick. He was insanely jealous of any other man who looked at Reese, possessively molesting her when he noticed anyone looking at her in a way he didn’t like. Lex, unfortunately, gave her a lot of those looks. But Reese liked them. She liked them enough that she broke up with Danvers a few days back, and was fully interested in breaking it off with him for good. She had another target in her sights.
After she reached the park, Reese received more and more texts from Lex, each requiring her to name whatever it was he was cluing her in to, and then when she reached that area of the park, he’d send her another one. No matter how hard she looked, she could never see him. Maybe it was because he was a photographer, he was sneaking around right under her nose and she never even saw him. Giving him an excuse to stalk her was alright in Reese’s books. He was sincere enough, in her opinion. She ran all the way along Rotten Row, made the trek around the Serpentine and then crossed back over via the solar-powered ferry, and over to the Ring. She was beginning to get tired, and sweaty, and she was thirsty; mercifully Lex seemed to have had enough of watching her run around like a moron. ‘there’s a tree that hangs upside down. find it, and the bench near it. from the bench, call out the inscription, and your quest will be over.’ Reese knew that tree, it was some sort of willow that she used to play under when she was a kid, being taken to the park by her parents. Until she found a used condom under there and skewered it on a stick, asking her mother why the balloon was slimy. That’s when she wasn’t allowed under the tree along anymore, haha. Reese rubbed her somewhat sweaty forehead when she reached the tree, glancing around for the bench. Lex was no where in sight. Maybe he was hiding under the tree with the creepy-crawlies and hobos who pissed themselves. Her cheeks flushed, gnawing her lip as she read and re-read the inscription on the metal bench. There were tourists around, and a few people casually sitting in the grass. Awesome, Lex wanted her to look crazy and possibly even schizo. She cleared her throat, licking her lips before re-reading the text. ‘can’t I just text you what it says?’ she quickly keyed in, sending it to her friend and sighing at the reply. ‘call out the inscription and I’ll show myself.’ Actually, that little move was also to see if she could hear a phone going off when a text was received. Evidently Lex was smart enough to turn his on silent. She cleared her throat again, glancing between the cell phone in her hand and the bench before calling out the inscription. “To my lovely Mary on her sixtieth – with love from David.” Her cheeks were reddened from embarrassment, cursing Lex softly under her breath. He better have had something really good to do, or else he was going to get an ass kicking.
